WHO INVENTED THE LIGHT BULB – who discovered the light!
Who Invented The Light Bulb : The light bulb is one of the conveniences that people use every day. But who invented the light bulb? Many people would agree that it was Thomas Edison because this is what they were taught at schools. However, the development of the light bulb is more difficult and Thomas Edison was not the only inventor who was working on this creation. In this article, we will mention some other inventors, who are known for their creations of electric batteries, incandescent bulbs and lamps.
Thus, as it has been stated, even when children are asked who invented the light bulb, the answer they will give would sound like this: Thomas Edison did it in 1879. However, the creation of the light bulb started long before that. In 1800, Alessandro Volta from Italy created the voltaic pile, which generated electricity. Thus, Alessandro Volta could also be considered as the pioneer of the modern battery, in addition to being the first inventor who used incandescent lighting.
Then, another inventor from England, called Humphrey Davy, invented the first electric lamp in the world.
In 1850, Joseph Swan created a light bulb, which used carbonized paper filaments instead of the ones made of platinum, which were used by previous inventors, such as Warren de la Rue and William Staite. With this invention, Joseph Swan wanted to make the light bulb more efficient, however, the efficiency of the bulb which we have today was still not reached and his created light bulb was never sold.
In the 1880s, Charles Francis Brush wished to create an electric arc lighting system, which would be used in the United States. Although his invention was not a proper light bulb, the system he created could be used in commercial buildings or to light a street. Charles Francis Bush used electric generators in the system, which would later be used by Thomas Edison, as well.
In 1879, Thomas Edison got a patent for an electric lamp with a carbon filament. One year later, seeing how much success his invention got, Thomas Edison established the Edison Electric Illuminating Company of New York. His invention by many people is regarded as the first light bulb in the world, although, as we have discussed above, many other inventors contributed to its development. Today, there are many different light bulbs to choose from. Some people use compact fluorescent bulbs, whereas others use LED bulbs.
