But have you ever wondered who invented football? Some people may trace its origins to England, whereas others might say that it was invented a long time ago in ancient civilizations. In this article, we will overview some historical facts of this game.
In 1170, football was introduced to England, where it is immensely popular today. In one of the scripts of that time, it is referred to youths who gathered in the fields to play a game of ball. Also, there are some investigations done, which state that football was even played in China in the second and third century BC. Scripts of that time describe a game called Tsu’ Chu. In this game, the players used a leather ball, which was stuffed with feathers and hair. The aim of Tsu’ Chu was to get the ball into a small net, which was built on bamboo canes. The game was not so easy as the players had to defend themselves from their opponents, who tried to steal the ball, very similarly to today’s football.
When football was introduced to England, the players used an inflated animal bladder as a ball. Football became so much popular in England that Edward II, the king of the country at that time, became dissatisfied that people were distracted by the game and did not pay attention to archery, as it was about the time when he was preparing to go to war with Scotland
. Thus, he banned the game, which resulted in contention of the king. Other people, who banned this sport later, were Oliver Cromwell and Henry IV.
However, people fell in love with football so much that the sport still continued to be popular and played in the country. It became a vital part of life in working class families, which used the game to express their grievances and make friends with people from similar households. However, it is also worth mentioning that football usually did not end in a civilized way as there were no referees of the game and rules were quite limited. Thus, they often resulted in fights between the teams. One of the rules was that a player could punch other players in order to steal the ball or destroy his personal property and even his house.
Also, another rule was that an unlimited amount of players could participate in the game. There were some occasions when 1000 people would play the game, thus, it is quite obvious that it resulted in a mass fighting. Furthermore, a highway was one of the most popular places to play football, which caused even more troubles. As a result, in the 1800s, a document was issued, which banned playing football on highways, and those, who still did it, had to pay a fine.
